Alexia, Adaline and I made the early morning trek to see the Prairie Chickens dance in early April. The blind is usually completely booked all spring, but as luck would have it (or maybe not) they had a cancellation on a random Wednesday morning when the girls had a late start. The morning was very cold, windy and snowy, but they wanted to go anyway. We got up at 4:30 am to get to the site at 5:00 am to hike a mile across the snowy prairie in the dark to get to the blind well before sunrise so we wouldn't scare off the chickens. The hike there wasn't too bad because it was only lightly snowing and we were walking south with the wind from the north. The blind kept us sheltered from the wind and we brought hot chocolate, blankets and hand warmers to keep us toasty. Despite the weather the chickens arrived and put on a good show. The girls enjoyed watching them, but we had to sit there for 2.5 hours before we could leave, and the hike back was into the wind with pelting ice in our faces. I think we were all in tears by the time we got back to the car, but they still said it was worth the trip. Tough girls! It was an adventure for sure.
