Moving right along in search of good time and good news. With good friends you can't lose. This could become a habit. We did another epic camping trip this summer, and we ventured to the northwest this time. Since the camper died last summer at Arches, we left it parked in our driveway and packed the tent and hitched up a Pack Mule instead. It worked great for the trip and was much easier than hauling a trailer. We managed to leave relatively early on Saturday headed towards Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan. We drove right through one of my favorite places on earth, Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern, ND. I made the girls take a picture with me in front of one of my old study plots for my dissertation research. We heard grasshopper sparrows, but no Baird's sparrows. Chris got a good start on the bird list for the trip, Addi started her picture taking, and we even found some beautiful prairie lilies beside the lake. We didn't stop long through because we had to make it to the border before it closed. The rural border crossings between ND and Saskatchewan have limited hours. When we arrived at the border, we were the only car there and the town on the US side was deserted. The girls got to use their passports for the first time, but sadly they did not stamp them. The National Park is very close to the border, and we arrived at the park in time to go for a short walk and catch a beautiful sunset (thanks to wildfire raging up north). We didn't camp in our tent the first night because they had these little Otentiks at the site. It was nice not to have to set up the tent and the beds were descent. It was a long first day, but the views were worth it.
