The next day we did a lot of hiking. We hiked up to see the bristle cone pine trees along the tree line of Wheeler Peak. They were INCREDIBLE! Individual trees that are up to 4,000 years old. They are gnarly looking trees growing in a very rocky and harsh environment, but it was so cool to be in the presence of a living being that is so old. The trail kept going up to the remnants of a glacier. Alexia wanted to keep going, but the trail was getting harder to see, and from what we heard from others the glacier no longer exists. It is just a pile of rocky debris now. We enjoyed the hike though with some amazing views of both the looming mountain peak and the Great Basin way down below. Later in the afternoon the girls and I also did a hike around a couple of high elevation glacial lakes. They were beautiful but very low water levels. The area was in a pretty severe drought. We watched the beautiful sunset as wet ate dinner, and the girls got a lot of use out of the camping hammock that Uncle Michael gave us.
