The day after visiting Zion we left St. George early to drive to Great Basin National Park. We drove across a LOT of wide open sage brush country that was absolutely beautiful. I kept hoping for a sage grouse, but we never spotted one. After driving for hours without seeing more than two cars, we arrived at Great Basin National Park. It was an island of mountains in a sea of sage brush. Our campground was actually at nearly 10,000 feet elevation, and we could feel it. It was a beautiful spot in an aspen forest on the edge of a clearing. Our campsite was already occupied when we arrived, but the camp host solved the problem for us. We had plenty of time to set up the tent, but had to cook dinner in the dark that evening. Great Basin is one of the darkest places in the country and the night sky was INCREDIBLE. The park at both a Junior Ranger Badge and a night explorer badge, and the girls did both. We drug our blankets and chairs into the clearing and were in awe of the stars.
